| 9/29/2010 1:00 p.m. eastern | Ralph Craft Analysis Division | 2009: Historic Truck Crash Declines Crash data from 2009 show the largest decrease in fatal truck crashes since NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) started collecting data in 1975. Fatalities in large truck crashes dropped 20 percent from 2008 to 2009, following a 12 percent decline from 2007 to 2008. In this webinar, Dr. Ralph Craft of FMCSA’s Office of Analysis, Research and Technology will present large truck and bus crash data from 2009, trend data covering the last ten years, and focus specifically on the last two years of historic decreases. The webinar will also discuss reasons for the declines, and present some comparisons to crash data for passenger vehicles. Dr. Craft is a recognized expert in commercial vehicle crash data analysis and has worked for FMCSA for the past 18 years. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about these latest truck and bus crash statistics and to have Dr. Craft answer your questions during the question and answer period at the end of his presentation. 60 minutes |
| 7/14/2010 1:00 p.m. eastern | Scott Valentine Analysis Division | FMCSA Improvements to the A&I Web site A&I Online is an FMCSA Internet Web site (http://ai.volpe.dot.gov/) that provides safety information ranging from evaluation of commercial motor vehicle operators to assessing individual motor carrier safety records to analysis of FMCSA and State motor carrier safety programs — and more. The site is increasingly being used by stakeholders throughout the motor carrier industry, including FMCSA and State safety enforcement personnel, motor carriers, shippers, the insurance industry, Federal and State safety managers, and the public. It is anticipated that more than 4 million visits will be made to the A&I Web site in 2010, underscoring the continued trend of substantial growth in the number of visitors. In this webinar, Scott Valentine of the ART Analysis Division will provide an update on the review and improvements that FMCSA is continuing to make to the A&I Web site to make it an even more effective tool that helps visitors efficiently use data and analysis from the Web site to progress more rapidly toward their shared safety goals. 60 minutes |
| 6/23/2010 1:00 p.m. eastern | Michael Johnsen Analysis Division | Pre-employment Screening Program Online Service Demonstration The Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) is a new, national-level program designed to offer motor carriers and commercial drivers electronic access to drivers’ records from the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS). A PSP record contains a driver’s crash and inspection history to help motor carriers make more informed hiring decisions. The PSP allows motor carrier employers to take the crash and inspection history of drivers into account when deciding on hiring new employees, and also offers drivers the option to view their personal PSP record at any time. Join the Analysis Division’s Michael Johnsen for an overview of the PSP program, and for demonstrations of both the motor carrier and commercial driver online services. The Pre-Employment Screening Program, required by Congress through the latest transportation reauthorization bill, SAFETEA-LU, is voluntary, and a motor carrier must obtain the driver’s written consent prior to requesting a driver’s record. PSP data is handled according to all applicable laws and regulations. The PSP Web site can be accessed at http://www.psp.fmcsa.dot.gov/Pages/default.aspx. 60 minutes |
| 5/12/2010 1:00 p.m. eastern | Jeff Loftus, Technology Division Chief and Technology Division project managers Technology Division | Talking Safety Technology FMCSA's technology program supports the Agency's safety mission by developing, testing and deploying innovative commercial vehicle, driver, and roadside technologies. Mr. Jeff Loftus, Technology Division Chief, will be moderating this webinar, which will focus on programs involving cutting edge safety technologies presented by Technology Division staff members. Mr. Quon Kwan will discuss the current progress on the Commercial Skills Test Information Management System, a web-based Software-As-A-Service system for detecting and/or deterring fraud perpetrated during CDL skills testing activities. Mr. Chris Flanigan will cover the preliminary test results from the Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems project in which the systems were field tested to obtain information on safety benefits, user acceptance, reliability, durability, and maintainability. He will also talk about the impacts, costs and benefits resulting from the Enhanced Rear Signaling Field Operational Test. Mr. Jon Mueller will give a status update on the IntelliDrive for trucks and motor coaches program, which is focused on advancing connectivity among vehicles and roadway infrastructure in order to significantly improve the safety and mobility of the U.S. transportation systems. 60 minutes |
| 4/14/2010 1:00 p.m. eastern | Chris Flanigan Technology Division | FMCSA Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems Program: Heavy Truck Field Operational Test Preliminary Results The goal of the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems (IVBSS) Program is to demonstrate technologies needed to equip both light vehicles and heavy trucks with advanced driver assistance systems designed to help drivers avoid the most common types of deadly crashes: forward collision, lane change/merge, and road departure. Information was developed on how best to communicate warnings from an integrated system covering multiple hazards to the driver. To understand the safety benefits of the system, as well as driver behavior and acceptance, a field operational test (FOT) was conducted using 10 heavy trucks with 18 drivers. In this webinar, Chris Flanigan of the ART Technology Division will give an overview of FMCSA’s involvement in the IVBSS Program and James Sayer, IVBSS Program Director from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, will discuss the heavy truck FOT and provide some preliminary results. 60 minutes |
| 2/24/2010 1:00 p.m. eastern | Michael Johnsen Analysis Division | FMCSA Pre-employment Screening Program The Pre-employment Screening Program (PSP) is a new, national-level program designed to allow motor carriers to see a driver’s crash and inspection file when they apply for employment with the motor carrier. The program, required by Congress through the latest transportation reauthorization bill, SAFETEA-LU, is voluntary, and the driver must give consent to allow his or her records to be viewed by their potential employer. The driver record will be comprised of data found in FMCSA’s Motor Carrier Information Management System, or MCMIS. FMCSA is taking every possible measure to assure the data is protected and handled according to all applicable laws and regulations. The Analysis Division’s Michael Johnsen will provide an update of the PSP, which is currently under development and expected to be available to the public in early 2010. 60 minutes |
